Back in December 2013, the Daily News reported that the Golden Gloves was encouraging competitors and fans of the tournament to submit their nominations for the first-ever Hall of Fame class through the Daily News Golden Gloves Facebook page.  This inaugural Hall of Fame class will focus on boxers who have had success in and out of the ring. The five-member selection committee included current tournament director and three-time Gloves champion Bryan Adams, longtime Daily News writer and Gloves historian Bill Farrell, Gleason’s Gym owner Bruce Silverglade, Yonkers PAL director... Latest News:  Alex Ramos Talks about a stunning documentary on Latin Boxers produced and directed by Alan Swyer
June 16, 2013

I just wanted to share this trailer with you for a stunning documentary on Latin boxers, produced and directed by Alan Swyer whose work has appeared on HBO in the past. Not only does it include interviews from Latin boxers like myself and Carlos Palomino, Oscar DeLaHoya, and other retired fighters, it also has interviews with Canelo Alvarez, Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini and many others. Alan Swyer has offered us the opportunity to screen this documentary "premiere" in Los Angeles as a fundraiser for the Retired Boxers Foundation.  I would like your opinion on what you see in the trailer and some feed back on whether you find this topic interesting.  I would also like to know if you want to be on the invitation list for the film premiere. Throughout history, boxing has embraced wave after wave of newcomers. Irish boxers made their mark early, as did Italians, and even Jewish fighters.  Despite the success of Jack Johnson, Joe Louis, and Sugar Ray Robinson, it was only after Jackie Robinson broke baseball's “color line,” that there was a true surge of black talent in the ring.  These groups not merely enriched the sport, but also became a means of both acceptance and assimilation for their communities – all the while providing key streams of revenue for the sport itself.

Exclusive: Alex Ramos Bounces Back From Brain Surgery
July 9, 2012
By Michele Chong

Former prizefighter Alex Ramos (39-10-2, 24 KOs) knows how to get back on his feet after life throws you a couple of curve balls.
The “Bronx Bomber” has had his share of health woes. On June 13 and previously on May 30, he underwent two surgeries to combat Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH), which affects balance, increases dementia and incontinence, among other crippling side effects. He had been falling down and forced to shuffle while walking. During his recent procedures, Ramos, 51, had a shunt put in his brain to allow the excess cerebral spinal fluid to flow out to relieve the accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid.
I checked in with the ex-pro boxer at Saturday night’s HBO and Top Rank card held at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California. The evening showcased a doubleheader of Nonito Donaire-Jeffrey Mathebula and Kelly Pavlik-Will Rosinsky and Ramos was there to witness all the action.

Gift from an Angel: Smokin’ Joe Frazier
April 10, 2012
SIMI VALLEY—Memories of our friends, especially professional boxers who move on to better things in heaven, are usually sweet and maybe even bittersweet. The bottom line is that we are accepting of the fact that we are left with memories, and no more …..UNLESS you are talking about Smokin’ Joe Frazier!  Joseph William "Joe" Frazier (January 12, 1944 – November 7, 2011), also known as Smokin' Joe, was an professional boxer and Undisputed World Heavyweight Champion during professional career that lasted from 1965 to 1976, with a one-fight comeback in 1981. On April 4th, 2011, he made a final comeback as the “Undisputed Champion for Dignity!” when a check for $20,000 arrived in the mail box of the Retired Boxers Foundation. The check was from the Cantor Fitzgerald Relief Fund and was a donation made on behalf of Cantor Fitzgerald to a charity of Smokin Joe Frazier’s choice, because of Joe’s participation in a Charity Day event in New York City.  Full Story

  Alex Ramos: One Last Fight
by Bernie McCoy  -August 15, 2011

Calling boxing a contact sport is much like calling the atomic bomb an explosive device. Key differences between boxing and football are that football players wear... Full Story
